What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed by plastic surgeons in New Jersey every year. It is a surgical procedure through which women have their breasts enlarged. The reasons behind the breast enlargement may vary depending on each woman’s individual preference or need. A cosmetic surgeon will perform a breast implant surgery through which the breasts are larger in size and help boost the woman’s self-esteem.
How are Candidates Evaluated for Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Most generally, the NJ cosmetic surgeon will examine the breasts and in most cases take photographs which will be placed in the patient’s medical records. The surgeon will be looking at the current size as well as shape of the breasts, their appearance, the placement of the nipples and areolas, and the overall quality of the woman’s skin. In cases where the breasts are sagging, the cosmetic surgeon may suggest that the patient undergo a breast lift at the same time she is going to have the breast augmentation. The surgeon will ask numerous questions which pertain to your medical history as well as your current state of health.
What type of Incision will be made?
Once the plastic surgeon determines the type of augmentation which will help a patient achieve their desired result, they will discuss the procedure with the patient. The most common incision for a breast augmentation is to make a cut under the breasts close to the crease where it meets the chest. This way, the scar will not be visible under most circumstances. It will not even be revealed when wearing a bathing suit. This type of incision is called an Inframammary augmentation.
Another common place to make the incision is where the areola which surrounds the nipple meets the skin. When the incision is made in this location, it is called a Periareolar augmentation. The incision itself is very small and typically extends less than half the distance around the areola’s lower portions.
An Axillary or transaxillary incision is also an incision point for the breast augmentation. This type of procedure can be done without using an endoscope. Other incisions use this type of surgical instrument to facilitate the breast implants insertion.
A fourth method which is used less frequently is to enter through the belly button. This procedure is called an Umbilical or a Transumbilical augmentation. The incision in the navel will necessitate the use of an endoscope.
Placement of the Implant for Breast Augmentation
In most cases, the implants are placed under the pectoralis muscle. This placement may be termed subpectoral or submuscular. Other cases are subglandular and the implants are placed on top of the pectoralis muscle at a level just beneath the breast gland or tissue. When a patient has a submuscular augmentation they will typically require a general anesthetic. For subglandular procedures, the patient usually only needs a local anesthetic given via the vein.
Why is a Breast Augmentation Performed?
There can be one or many different reasons that an individual elects to have a breast augmentation done. Many times a woman requests this procedure because she feels self-conscious about the size of her breasts. This can make a woman feel very uncomfortable when she is wearing a swim suit or even a form fitting top. For some women, after childbirth their breasts become smaller; and others find that after losing a substantial amount of weight their breast size and shape have changed. Some women have a difficult time finding clothes since they may fit well around the hips but not fit well in the bust line. The plastic surgeon who performs the procedure will most likely ask about the reasons for desiring a breast augmentation before he begins.
